Medical situation in Malawi

hygiene-laujiThe district of Chikhwawa (4.755 km2) is a remote area far from urban Malawi. The district has got one governmental hospital and a few clinics, which are located far apart from each other. Heat and drought make Chikhwawa unattractive for development aid. Of its population of 438,895 people, 210,000 are under the age of 16. Over the past three years more than 150,000 persons in Chikhwawa have had an HIV/AIDS test, 14,6% of them turned out to be HIV/AIDS positive. There were 21.945 pregnant women in the district in June 2010. Of them 4,351 visited the hospital. Out of 3,649 HIV-tested women, 12.5% appeared to be  positive. The management of the governmental hospital in Chikhwawa recognizes the need for more medical care and tries to realize additional Clinics in the village communities.

Every year in Africa 1,800,000 people die because of malaria; 75% are under five. Most of these victims are being found in the poorest countries of Africa. Malawi is one of them.
